Virechan Ayurvedic Cleansing and Detox Therapy

Virechan Treatment – Ayurvedic Cleansing & Detox Therapy

Virechan is a core Panchakarma detox therapy in Ayurveda that uses medicated herbal purgatives to eliminate excess Pitta dosha and accumulated metabolic toxins (Ama) from the body through the lower digestive tract. It is one of the five primary Panchakarma procedures and is considered the most effective treatment for Pitta-related disorders.

Unlike Vaman which targets Kapha dosha through the upper body, Virechan focuses on Pitta elimination through the intestinal tract, cleansing the liver, gallbladder, small intestine, and blood — all primary seats of Pitta dosha in the body.

Procedure

Pre-Therapy Preparation (Snehapan – 3–6 Days)

  • The patient drinks medicated ghee on an empty stomach each morning, starting from 30 ml and gradually increasing to 180 ml over the preparation days.
  • Snehan (oleation therapy) and Swedan (herbal steam therapy) are simultaneously administered to loosen toxins and mobilize Pitta dosha.

Main Therapy Day

  • The patient sits comfortably and takes the prescribed Ayurvedic purgative medicine.
  • After each bowel movement, the patient drinks black resin water (Krishnadi Jala) to support the elimination process.
  • The patient alternates between gentle walking and rest throughout the procedure day.
  • The process continues until whitish or sticky discharge appears, indicating thorough Pitta elimination.

Post-Therapy (Sansarjan Kram)

  • A special dietary regimen with moong dal soup, rice, and other light foods is followed to restore digestive strength.
  • Digestive powder is consumed to gradually rebuild the digestive fire (Agni) after the cleansing.

What Is Virechan Treatment in Ayurveda?

Virechan is an Ayurvedic medicated purgation therapy that uses herbal medicines to expel excess Pitta dosha and toxins from the body through the gastrointestinal tract. It comprehensively cleanses the liver, intestines, and blood, enhancing digestion, improving metabolism, clearing skin conditions, and restoring hormonal balance.

How Virechan Panchakarma Works

In Ayurveda, Pitta dosha governs digestion, metabolism, liver function, and the quality of the blood. When Pitta accumulates excessively — due to diet, stress, or lifestyle — it leads to hyperacidity, skin disorders, liver dysfunction, inflammation, and hormonal imbalance. Virechan eliminates this excess Pitta through the intestinal tract, detoxifying the liver, cleansing the blood, and restoring metabolic balance.
