What Is Anuvasana Basti Treatment?
Anuvasana Basti is an oil-based Ayurvedic enema in which warm medicated oil is introduced into the colon through the rectum. The term "Anuvasana" means "that which stays" — referring to the oil being retained in the body for a longer duration to deeply nourish tissues, lubricate joints, and restore Vata balance. It is one of the two main types of Basti therapy in Panchakarma and is considered the most nourishing among them.
Procedure
- The patient is asked to lie down comfortably in the left lateral position on the treatment table.
- A gentle full-body or lower back oil massage (Abhyanga) is performed before the procedure to prepare the body.
- Sarvanga Swedan (full-body herbal steam) is given after the massage to open the channels and improve absorption of the oil.
- Warm medicated oil, selected based on the patient's condition and Prakriti, is prepared and checked for the right temperature.
- The medicated oil is slowly and gently administered into the rectum using a special Basti instrument (enema syringe).
- The patient is advised to retain the oil for as long as comfortable. The oil is absorbed by the colon and works to nourish deep tissues.
- After the retention period, the patient may pass the oil naturally. A light warm meal is recommended afterward.
How Anuvasana Basti Works in Ayurveda
According to Ayurveda, the colon is the primary seat of Vata dosha. When Vata becomes aggravated, it leads to dryness, pain, stiffness, bloating, constipation, and weakness throughout the body. Anuvasana Basti introduces medicated oil directly into the colon, which is rapidly absorbed and carried through the body's channels (srotas). This deeply lubricates tissues, calms aggravated Vata, strengthens muscles and bones, improves digestion, and supports overall rejuvenation. The therapy works at a deep cellular level, making it one of the most powerful Ayurvedic treatments for chronic conditions.
